The Red Wolf is one of the world's most endangered species. Only seventeen red wolves remained in 1973. Today they number around 300 due to recovery efforts. The original range of the Red Wolf extended throughout the southeast and as far north as the Ohio River Valley.

The Cherokee Indians called the Red Wolf "Wa ya". It is one of two species of wolves in North America, the other being the gray wolf. As their name suggests, red wolves are known for the characteristic reddish color of their fur. They form pair bonds for life with a pack consisting of their offspring. There have been no documented cases of healthy wild red wolves attacking humans in North America, despite 500 years of historical coexistence.
